Fifty Years of Positive Creative Youth Development!

Over the last fifty years, Sociedad Latina has been an anchor institution in Mission Hill and Boston, forging strong bonds with generations of Latino young people and their families. We opened our doors in 1968 in the South End, as a social club for recently-arrived immigrants to find community and preserve their Latino cultural traditions. We moved to Mission Hill in the late 1980’s, redirecting our work to cultivate solutions towards the most pressing needs impacting Boston’s Latino youth and families such as youth violence prevention, education and professional barriers to success, poverty, and health disparities.

Since then, Sociedad Latina has evolved into a dynamic, cutting-edge organization, increasing the number of youth and families that we partner with each year from 2,000 in 2011 to 5,000 in 2019. At the heart of our work is an organization-wide commitment and promise to cultivate youth potential and ensure that Boston’s young Latinos have the leadership skills necessary to participate fully in — and contribute meaningfully to — our society.

In 2018, Sociedad Latina purchased our long-time home at 1530 Tremont Street. This has become an important and necessary step towards remaining a resource for future generations of youth and families in Mission Hill/Roxbury and Greater Boston. The young people and their families, Sociedad Latina alum, and community partners and supporters took a lead role, conveying why Sociedad Latina was important to their personal journey, their families, and Latinos across the city.

We have a lot to be thankful for as we enter into the new year! Sociedad Latina is embarking on the next phase of our Capital Campaign with a renovation of our 1530 Tremont Street location to create a community hub that celebrates Latino culture and youth leadership, hosts cutting-edge programs, and serves as a safe space for youth. Our renovations will bolster participation in our programs by balancing essential building repairs with architectural enhancements for improved program space.

Ultimately, our renovation will result in a modern, welcoming, and youth-friendly building that benefits and beautifies Boston’s Latino, Mission Hill, and Greater Boston communities. In this vibrant center for youth leadership and achievement, Sociedad Latina will empower more of our young people to realize their potential and become true leaders in their community.
