Sociedad Latina Receives $10,000 Targeted Grant To Advance Women

This grant from Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation will support our STEM Escalera program, providing Latina youth and English Learners in grades 9-12 with culturally relevant STEM programming in order to prepare them for postsecondary success and steer them towards high-paying careers in Boston's robust technology and STEM fields.

Mission Hill, August 9, 2018 – Sociedad Latina received a $10,000 Targeted Grant from Eastern Bank, America’s oldest and largest mutual bank. Each year, the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation’s Targeted Grant program supports hundreds of community-based organizations working for progress on a specific issue in Eastern’s New England footprint. In 2018, in celebration of the Bank’s 200th anniversary and to honor its first depositor, Rebecca Sutton, Targeted Grants have been designated to support organizations addressing a range of issues that disproportionately impact women, such as sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking, health care, pay equity, and senior management and board representation.

Sociedad Latina is among 170 nonprofits each receiving a $10,000 grant. In total, Eastern is granting $1.7 million in Targeted Grants this year to nonprofits in communities from New Hampshire to Cape Cod and throughout the South Shore, North Shore, Metro West, Merrimack Valley, and Greater Boston.

“Sociedad Latina appreciates the continued support from the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation,” Lydia Emmons, Associated Director, stated. “With their support, we are able to provide young Latinas and English Learners with greater opportunities to achieve their educational and career goals in STEM-related fields.”

About Sociedad Latina
Sociedad Latina's mission is to create the next generation of Latino leaders who are confident, competent, self-sustaining and proud of their cultural heritage. Since 1968, Sociedad Latina has been working in partnership with Latino youth and families to end the destructive cycle of poverty, inequality to access of health services, and lack of educational and professional opportunities in our community. Through our Pathways to Success model, we take the initiative by introducing new and innovative solutions to the most critical problems facing young Latinos today. Our approach celebrates our diverse Latino heritages and enables young people to forge identities with deep roots in Latin culture. Our model supports the positive youth development from 11 to 21 years of age, creating a community that values young people and enables them to be the defenders of their rights and those of their community.
