Welcoming Hurricane Survivors
On October 27, Sociedad Latina, in partnership with the City of Boston and Boston Public Schools, opened our doors as a Community Welcome Center for families leaving Puerto Rico and the Caribbean after the impact caused by Hurricane Maria. The primary focus of our Welcome Center is to provide the necessary resources and supports to help families rebuild their lives, feel like they belong in the community, and know that there is still hope despite the devastation.
Over 130 families were welcomed by Sociedad Latina staff and assisted in registering for Boston Public Schools, FEMA disaster relief, Mass Health and SNAP benefits. Our third floor was also converted into a donation center where families received welcome packages with clothing, school supplies, and food. Additionally, families were provided with resources on knowing their rights when it came to registering for government programs, as well as referrals to organizations offering mental and emotional support.
Due to the constant changes and uncertainties these families are facing, Sociedad Latina has been adapting our support services to meet their needs. This spring our staff is working alongside Boston Public Schools, Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción, and the Family Resource Center to strategically reassess family needs. We plan to provide continued case management and referral services such as job training and placement, social-emotional health services, and support in finding access to food and housing for families.
