On September 21st, 650 community members came together at One Brigham Circle in Mission Hill to celebrate Latino Heritage Month during our annual ¡Viva Nuestra Cultura! event. The Jonathan Suazo Quintet (provided by Berklee College of Music), our Youth Artists band and Matthew Sánchez y su Orquesta delighted the audience with a range of Latino music. We also hosted art-making activities for the whole family with Massachusetts College of Art & Design and Museum of Fine Arts. Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about Sociedad Latina’s innovative civic engagement, arts and culture, work readiness and academic success programs, as well as how they could get more involved in their community.

At the event, Sociedad Latina awarded the 2017 Nuestra Voz award to the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, recognizing their work to safeguard the civil, social, and economic liberties of residents in Greater Boston and throughout Massachusetts. In recent months, the Lawyers’ Committee has advocated for fairer school discipline policies and against xenophobic changes in immigration policy. Executive Director Iván Espinoza-Madrigal represented the organization at the event.

If you couldn’t join us on the 21st, check out coverage of the event here. Throughout Latino Heritage Month, our teen Youth Artists hosted events and performed across Boston, including at three open mic nights at Sociedad Latina, the Opening our Doors festival, Institute of Contemporary Art’s Teen Night and New England Revolution’s Noche Latina.
