Community Development and Organizing Manager

Sociedad Latina, a non-profit organization serving youth and their families in the Mission Hill neighborhood and the Greater Boston Area, is looking for a creative, organized professional with a background in health and/or community organizing and experience working with youth and supervising employees.  The Community Development and Organizing Manager will work in partnership with staff, youth, parents and community members to identify issues, potential solutions, and lead organizing campaigns that bring about positive changes and a healthy community for the youth and families of Mission Hill and Boston at-large.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise all Community Organizing & job training/career exploration  staff, including coaching, providing positive & critical feedback, regular performance evaluations, supervising activities, implementing performance management and upholding the high expectations for all staff.
  • Oversee and coordinate activities of the Youth Community Organizing and job training/career exploration Programs, focusing on growing each campaign and meeting campaign goals.
  • Recruit youth and parents from Mission Hill and the City of Boston to participate in the activities of community organizing initiatives.
  • Conduct on-going recruitment of youth and parents and develop culturally competent, bilingual materials related to the program.
  • Coordinate activities/trainings/meetings for youth that develop leadership and multi-media skills, promote participation in civic life, and focus on issues that pertain to their community.
  • Overseeing planning and facilitation of community organizing and health initiatives, including volunteer recruitment, events, press, partnerships.
  • Represent organization at community and health meetings in Mission Hill and Boston as related to campaign and organizational issues.  Connect meetings and information to organizational activities.
  • Work in partnership with youth and parents to explore issues affecting them and their families related to health, education, and quality of life issues; develop action oriented strategies for change.
  • Work closely with partner organizations on community organizing initiatives and maintain and develop partner relationships.
  • Maintain and develop strong relationships with Longwood Medical Area institutions including hospitals and research schools in order to bring improved programming and resources to organization.
  • Conduct community outreach and assessments to determine organizing initiatives.
  • Facilitate positive communication and build relationships between Sociedad Latina and parents of youth program participants.
  • Work in partnership with program staff and directors on different organizing initiatives.
  • Responsible for data collection, grant reporting and evaluation, including preparation of Outcome Measurement Reports.
  • Works alongside additional Program Manager.
  • Communicate regularly regarding highlights and challenges within each program supervised, and brings solutions and innovative recommendations to address challenges or program needs.
  • Responsible for maintaining high quality standards in each program and overseeing the implementation of each program’s work plan.
  • Reports to Program Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Must have 2-3 years professional experience in community organizing and/or health within urban neighborhoods and supervisory experience.

Qualifications Include:

•    Ability to problem solve independently as directed.
•    Interpersonal and cultural sensitivity
•    Good communication and written skills
•    Bilingual (Spanish/English)
•    Comfort/willingness in working with ages 6-21 and with parents.
•    Applicant must have excellent management, interpersonal, and computer skills.
•    Must be willing to work 11-7 PM, some weekends and evenings.

Education Required:


B.A./B.S. in Policy, Health or related field, working with urban youth and/or programs for urban youth. 

Salary and Benefits:

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position.
